Blocked Tear Duct Surgery (DCR) Recovery

(Including alternate treatments for blocked tear ducts)

After surgery, you will likely be prescribed a topical antibiotic ointment (to be placed over the incision site on the skin 3 times per day), an antibiotic drop to be used in the eye, and an oral pain medication to be used as needed for post-operative discomfort. Take these medications as prescribed.

Following your surgery, apply cold compresses to the side of the nose and corners of the eye(s). Do this about 6 times a day for 15 minutes at a time until swelling subsides (typically 3-7 days).

Try to keep your head above your heart the first week after surgery. At night, sleep with your head propped up under 2 or 3 pillows; continue this as long as swelling persists.

Bloody discharge from the nose (that may empty into the back of the throat) is normal. This will typically resolve after 3-5 days. If you experience excessive bleeding that will not subside with pressure applied to the nose, please call our office immediately.

Avoid heavy lifting and air travel (the pressure difference can strain the operative site) for 7-10 days following your procedure.

Avoid blowing your nose vigorously or heavy sneezing while the stent is in place (approximately 3 months).

You may be able to see the silicone tubing extending from the inner corner of the operated eye(s). Avoid manipulating or disrupting this silicone tubing. If the silicone tube dislodges and “loops out” toward the eye, tape the tube to the side of the nose and call our office to make an appointment to come in and have the tube repositioned or removed.

If you feel any drying or discomfort on the inside of the nose, it is okay to apply a small amount of Vaseline gently to the area or gently use a saline nasal spray but avoid manipulating the silicone tubing.

If you feel any stuffiness or congestion while any tubing is in place, we recommend using nasal strips that can be bought at any drugstore and worn at night. Also, you may find saline nasal spray to be helpful.

It is okay to shower 24-48 hours after surgery but avoid direct pressure over the incision site(s) or tubes.

Typically, you will return to the office 1-3 weeks after surgery for your first post-operative check and then again in 3-6 months after surgery to have the silicone tube removed.
