Most patients experience minor discomfort following their procedure. A pain medication and oral antibiotic will be prescribed for you following surgery. Please take these medications according to instruction. If you still feel a significant amount of discomfort call our office and we can adjust your medication.
You should begin applying cold packs following your surgery preferably for 15 minutes, about 6 times a day for the first three days after your procedure or until swelling has begun to plateau or subside. Cold packs can consist of crushed ice, frozen vegetables or gel packs. Always wrap cold packs in a clean washcloth before applying to the skin.
The ointment should be used until the tube is gone. No further refills should be required. If you feel an intense burning or itching after application of the ointment, please discontinue usage immediately and call our office; you may be having an allergic reaction. The ointment can work its way onto the eyeball itself, in which case your vision would appear slightly blurry. This is normal.
Sleep with your head propped up at night under a few pillows. This will help keep blood buildup and pressure away from the operated area.
If the suture lines are along the hairline, wait 2-3 days after surgery before showering. Keep your head tilted back to avoid getting shampoo in the sutures. Also, when washing your face, do so with a washcloth versus scrubbing in order to keep soap and water away from the suture lines.
It is normal to experience oozing of blood or clear liquid from any incisions made for a few days following your procedure. If you find you are bleeding excessively, enough to soak a washcloth, please contact our office as soon as possible. We have a 24-hour answering service that will be able to contact our doctors.
Avoid all heavy lifting of 15 lbs or more for the first 7-10 days.
If you have non-dissolvable sutures, usually dark blue in color, you will need to come back into our office within 7 days to have them removed.
When the swelling subsides you can switch to warm packs and apply them in order to ease any itching or irritation. You can do this by wringing out a clean washcloth in warm water.
A standard post-operative appointment will be set up for you usually 1-2 weeks out after surgery.
